Transition from School to Work

Adult Services/ Resources
The DODD supports the goals of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA)

These goals focus on independence and inclusion and define transition services as:

  • “a coordinated set of activities for a child with a disability that—“

  • “ is designed to be a results-oriented process, that is focused on improving the academic and functional achievement of the child with a disability to facilitate the child's movement from school to post-school activities, including post-secondary education, vocational education, integrated employment (including supported employment), continuing and adult education, adult services, independent living, or community participation;”

  • ”is based on the individual child’s needs, taking into account the child's strengths, preferences, and interests.”

The IDEIA requires that transition planning be in the individualized education programs (IEPs) of all secondary school students with disabilities beginning at age 16 in an effort to prepare them for the challenges of adulthood.

Youth and family members must be provided with the knowledge to navigate this transition. Collaboration between all relevant agencies; including local County Boards of DD, The Ohio Rehabilitation Services Commission/Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation (RSC/BVR), and school personnel is essential.
