Self Determination

From time to time, individuals volunteer information about their personal journeys in the process of self-determination, and share their stories with the DODD in the hope of helping others to find success as self-advocates. We will share those stories here, and hope you enjoy learning about and sharing their success.

The following presentation on Self-Determination was created by Tom Nerney, Executive Director, Center for Self-Determination.  It describes in detail the
‘Five Principles of Self-Determination’ …

  • Authority

  • Confirmation

  • Support

  • Freedom

  • Responsibility

… and how these principles relate to individuals, family members, and people who work in the developmental disabilities system. The presentation is a guideline for encouraging our system to be more self-directed, and to give individuals opportunities to make their own choices regarding their lives.
