How do I apply for a job?

Complete all sections of an Ohio Civil Service Application. Attach relevant information (e.g. resume’, transcripts, addendum). The application can be hand delivered, faxed (keep in mind that the transmission may not be legible), mailed or submitted over the internet using the State of Ohio job website by the deadline. NOTE: Application post marked by the deadline will be accepted. No information will be accepted after the deadline.

How can I improve my chances of obtaining employment?

  • Apply for positions in which you meet the minimum qualifications. Some positions have several different qualifications that must be met. Be sure to state clearly how you meet each. List all relevant training, education and experience.
  • Verify whether or not a civil service test exists for the classification you are interested by checking the State of Ohio job web site @ www.stateofohiojobs.com. If there is a test offered, you must take the exam in order to be considered for employment.
  • Submit an application and an attachment, if applicable, by the deadline.

Should I call and check on the status of a position I applied for?

No. You can check the status of a position by opening the job posting status page on this web-site OR by clicking on the job posting status link on any DODD job posting.

Will I receive a letter notifying me that that the position has been filled?

No. The status of positions will be listed on this web site.

Is there preference given for certain positions or applicants?

Yes. If the position you are applying for is covered by a collective bargaining agreement, then employees in that particular union have first consideration for the vacancy. In addition, candidates that have taken civil service exams will be given initial employment consideration over applicants that have not taken a civil service test (per the Ohio Revised Code).

Why does it take so long to fill a position?

There are many factors that go into filling a position with the State of Ohio such as: screening applications, setting up and conducting interviews and completing required paperwork per the various collective bargaining agreements and the Ohio Revised Code.
