Many things contribute to living a healthy and safe life. One of them is scheduling regular check-ups with a physician, dentist, or other medical professional. On this site is a Wellness Plan that lists when people should schedule these visits, and what screenings would be important to have completed.
Some people need support and/or services to prevent them from actions that may hurt themselves or others. In these cases, it is important that a system of Behavior Supports is put in place. Information about Behavior Supports is being updated and will be available on this site in the near future.

Another system to ensure a person’s health and safety is providing an appropriate and immediate response to an event that happens in someone’s life. This response is designed to ensure the health and safety of that person and other people around them. These events are reviewed by the DODD to understand why the event happened, and what can be done regarding those issues in the future. This is a part of ‘prevention planning’. More information on this review system can be found under the area named Major Unusual Incidents (MUIs).
There are areas in which the DODD has identified a risk to people, and what can be done to avoid or reduce that risk. Information about these risks is called Health and Safety Alerts. A part of ‘prevention planning’ is not allowing certain individuals to work with the people we serve. There are two main methods to exclude individuals in order to ensure the health and safety of the people we serve: Background Checks and the Abuser Registry.
The DODD has three standing committees to assist with Health and Safety issues in our system. The committees are Mortality Review, Statewide Trends and Patterns and the External Abuser Registry Review Committee.
For more information, please call the MUI/Registry Unit at (614) 995-3810 or send an email request to MUI.Unit@dodd.ohio.gov.
It is also important for people to get the correct medication at the right time, and in the right dosage. There is a system in place for this, and it is called Medication Administration. Nurses have been trained and certified to teach the DD Personnel training related to medication administration. Certification for any nurse trainer begins the date he or she is officially trained and expires on the date he or she must renew his or her regular nursing license.
